This morning Mom and I eagerly tore off the pages preceding our January 1, 2016 daily affirmation from Louise Hay.
I had purchased an ‘I Can Do It’ calendar last year for the first time and looked forward to seeing the new affirmation every day.
When Mom came to live with me last October she joined in my ritual of reading the affirmation each morning.
For Christmas , ‘Santa’ brought us a 2016 I Can Do It Daily Affirmation Calendar.
Mom opened it and was excited to know we would be continuing this practice.
When I began to read the Introduction, I got choked up and started to cry. Mom sat patiently, waiting to hear what words were on the page that had moved me.
The Year of Service
A brief background before I share the words from the introduction that moved me.
If you have been following my blog you know that I believe I was born for a life of service.
My life, indeed, has been one of service. Personally and professionally.
You may recall that I wrote, after my husband died, I ‘heard’ him tell me one day I must edit my daily prayer request of the past 20 years, ‘lead me to my highest potential in service to others’…to…’lead me to my highest potential in service to others, in a way that serves me as well.’
This message and the edification of my daily prayer had a great impact on my life choices, beginning with changing my commitment at my hospital nursing job from full time to an ‘as needed’ position, so I could pursue holistic health and healing work.
I Can Do It 2016 Introduction
‘This is a year of service.’ (This is where I got choked up and teary)
‘You will be attuned to the needs of everyone around you, and of the entire world.’ (more tears)
‘Global wellness is important, but so is your own backyard. As you feel the urge to heal and nurture others this year,
also remember to take time for yourself.’ (yep, more tears)
Mom then speaks up and says to me, ‘Wow. I can’t believe how this affirmation and so many others are made for you.
It is like they were written especially for you!’
Well, of course Louise Hay does not write them specifically for me, but I can see why Mom would say this as they are a good fit and 9 times out of 10 just what I need.
The Power of an Affirmation
I first learned about the power of an affirmation from Louise Hay. I utilized, and still do, her affirmations in my life and for many years have been creating my own affirmations…specifically for me and my life.
I am so grateful for this tool.
In defining what an affirmation is, Louise Hay says the following on her website. (see link below)
‘Today is a new day. Today is a day for you to begin creating a joyous, fulfilling life. Today is the day to begin to release all your limitations. Today is the day for you to learn the secrets of life. You can change your life for the better. You already have the tools within you to do so. These tools are your thoughts and your beliefs.
An affirmation is really anything you say or think. A lot of what we normally say and think is quite negative and doesn’t create good experiences for us. We have to retrain our thinking and speaking into positive patterns if we want to change our lives.
An affirmation opens the door. It’s a beginning point on the path to change. In essence, you’re saying to your subconscious mind: “I am taking responsibility. I am aware that there is something I can do to change.” When I talk about doing affirmations, I mean consciously choosing words that will either help eliminate something from your life or help create something new in your life.’

Do you affirm negative/destructive thoughts or positive/constructive thoughts? Perhaps 2016 can be your year for shifting to thoughts which better serve you.
Thoughts are energy with information. What sort of information would you like to convey to yourself?
